Murals can transform the energy of a room to transport you. Historically, murals have been found all over the world as a form of storytelling or bringing the outdoors in or simply, just art. As the old inevitably becomes new, and murals are now trending in public spaces, stores, and homes. Below are three modern muralists who are adding life to walls around us, even under water.
Rafael Uriegas

Rafael Uriegas, a Spanish born artist living in Mexico, creates frescos in Mexico including at the Pug Seal Oaxaca and Historic and Ethnographic Museum of Caborca. The Pug Seal Oaxaca is a 19th century villa converted to a boutique hotel nestled in Oaxaca’s city center. Upon entry into a beautiful courtyard, visitors are invites to further connect with Oaxacan culture. Uriegas painted a series of abstract figures and scenes that were inspired by myths of the Zapotecs, the indigenous people in the region.

Alex Proba

Alex Proba is a muralist based in New York City with work featured in hotels, restaurants, retail stores, and office spaces. Her abstract shapes, terrazzo patterns, and bright hues are instantly recognizable. Most recently she has done some incredible work inside of pools. At the Hill House in Palm Springs, Proba hand-painted a “shape party” on the floor of the pool which is soon to be featured in the stunning coffee table book, “Art Escapes: Hidden Art Experiences Outside the Museum” by gestalten.

Abel Macias

Abel Macias pulls from his Mexican heritage and his Southern California surroundings to create colorful, playful murals. Most recently his work is featured at the lobby of the Proper Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles and at the stunning Flamingo Estate store. Macias layers colors, textures, and patterns to infuse space with warmth, culture, and fun.
